REVIEW: Dean Daughtry Flooring

Dean installed 18x18 travertine flooring for us in our vacation home.  There was severe lippage throughout the house, as well as many areas where the tiles were not lined up correctly.  He verbally promised that when he "buffed" out the floor it would take out 80% of the lippage (lippage is when the tiles are uneven and not level, causing areas where you could stub your toe!) would be removed and he would make the floor even in sheen. That was not the case.

We finally had to have an expert flooring person come in and the entire floor needs to be ground down, filled and re-sealed and buffed. This will cost a tremendous amount to correct.

Dean Daughtry also said he would put down 5" moldings for us. The moldings were uneven, with large gaps where they met the floor, and 50% of the nails used were not counter-sunk.

He also installed a new shower and and valve.  The shower now spurts some water when the washer is on. He also re-installed the toilets...and left the bolts so high that the coverings would not go over them. In addition, the toilet shut off valves are now so close to the tile, that they cannot be utilized at all. We need  a plumber to come in and move them.

We also bought all new solid core doors for the interior and he hung 5 of the 7 doors. He was unable to complete this task because he said the old hinges were full of paint and they prevented the doors from being hung correctly.  Even if I believe that, and I did...we got all new hinges...and had to have someone else come out and re-do his work....we got a real carpenter this time.  The real carpenter discovered that some doors were hung upside down and some were backwards, necessitating repairs with Bondo where the knotches were carved out for the old hinges.  Mind you...these were new doors..and now they had to be filled to correct the mistakes.

We discovered that his workmanship was inferior. We found him on the internet...went to see a job he had done (which was very good) and engaged him because his price was the most competitive.  You live and you learn...but think before you hire him...THINK REALLY HARD...and DON'T DO IT!

  1. Dean was the one who told us WHERE to buy the Travertine and then later said that the material we got was inferior, which was a bogus response. He used tile thinset to lay the tiles, rather than a mud base and didn't level every tile. we had experts look at the tile and they said it was the PERSON (i.e., DEAN) who layed the tile that did the faulty work. it had nothing to do with the "grade" of the tile, which was from Turkey.
